  • Common fine threads: M8 × 1, M10 × 1 or × 1.25, M12 × 1.25 or × 1.5, M16 × 1.5, M20 × 1.5. State the pitch on every fine-thread line.

DIN 985 vs ISO 10511

ISO 10511 replaced DIN 985. The thread is the same, but the hex follows ISO wrench sizes (16 mm for M10, 18 mm for M12, 21 mm for M14) and the overall height is lower from M8 upwards. If your assembly uses fixed sockets or tight clearances, specify the one your drawing was designed for.

Thin vs regular-height lock nuts

DIN 985 and ISO 10511 are thin nuts with a reduced load-bearing height. They are intended to lock, not to carry the full strength of a high-strength bolt. Where the joint needs full proof load, use a regular-height nylon insert nut such as DIN 982 or ISO 7040, or an all-metal prevailing torque nut.

Temperature limits and reuse

  • Standard polyamide (nylon) inserts keep their locking properties from about −40 °C to +120 °C. Above that the insert softens and locking is lost; use an all-metal nut.
  • Each removal reduces the prevailing torque. Manufacturers recommend treating nyloc nuts as single-use on critical joints.
  • At least one to two full threads of the bolt should project through the nut so the insert engages fully.
  • Electroplated nuts for 10.9 joints should be baked; zinc flake is an alternative finish.

How to specify nylon lock nuts in your RFQ

  • Standard: DIN 985 or ISO 10511 (thin), DIN 982 or ISO 7040 (regular height), and whether the alternative is acceptable.
  • Thread size and pitch, including fine threads such as M10 × 1.25.
  • Property class as defined by the standard you name: DIN 985 is commonly ordered in class 6, 8 or 10, while ISO 10511 uses thin-nut classes such as 04 and 05; or stainless A2 / A4.
  • Finish: zinc plated, yellow zinc, zinc flake or plain stainless; insert colour if it matters (white or blue are common).
  • Service temperature, quantity per size and packaging.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between DIN 985 and DIN 982?

Both are nylon insert lock nuts. DIN 985 is the thin version and DIN 982 is the regular-height version with more load-bearing thread. Choose DIN 982 where higher load capacity is needed.

Is DIN 985 the same as ISO 10511?

Not exactly. ISO 10511 replaced DIN 985 with ISO wrench sizes (16 mm instead of 17 mm for M10, 18 mm instead of 19 mm for M12) and a lower overall height from M8 upwards.

Can nylon lock nuts be reused?

The nylon insert loses some locking torque each time the nut is removed. For critical joints, replace the nut after removal.

What temperature can a nylon insert lock nut handle?

Standard polyamide inserts are generally rated for about −40 °C to +120 °C. For higher temperatures use an all-metal prevailing torque nut such as DIN 980 / ISO 7042.

How much does an M10 DIN 985 nut weigh?

About 10.6 g in steel, or 10.6 kg per 1,000 pieces.

What is the MOQ for DIN 985 nuts?

Reference MOQ is 500 pcs per specification. Stock sizes typically ship in 10–15 days and made-to-order sizes in 25–30 days, subject to quotation. We reply to every RFQ within 2 working hours.
