Quick answer
Quick answer: common DIN 934 hex nut sizes
For the common sizes below, pitch, width across flats and DIN 934 nut height come from the complete dimension table, while weight uses the retained DIN 934 steel weight table and is stated per 1,000 pieces. ISO 4032 is taller for most sizes and uses a different width across flats at M10 and M12 in this selection, so confirm the governing nut standard before matching a bolt and nut set.

Hex nut dimensions (mm)
Nut height m is the maximum value. Pitch is the metric coarse thread. Width across flats s and height m are the two dimensions that change between DIN 934 and ISO 4032. M33, M39 and M45 are second-choice sizes; prefer M30, M36, M42 or M48 where the design allows. From M42 upwards both standards use the same dimensions.

Nuts are usually priced per thousand pieces but shipped by weight. The figures below are published DIN 934 steel weights; ISO 4032 nuts are slightly heavier where they are taller. Use them to estimate carton counts and freight before comparing quotations.

Which nut class goes with which bolt
Nut property classes are defined in ISO 898-2. The rule of thumb is that the first number of the bolt class matches the nut class, so the bolt breaks before the nut thread strips. A higher-class nut can always be used on a lower-class bolt; the reverse is not acceptable.
| Bolt class (ISO 898-1) | Matching nut class (ISO 898-2) | Common nut standard | Inquiry |

- ISO 898-2 load values are defined for nuts with ISO style 1 and style 2 heights. Where a joint must develop the full strength of a 10.9 or 12.9 bolt, specify ISO 4032 or the taller ISO 4033 nut rather than the lower DIN 934 nut.
- Stainless nuts on stainless bolts can gall during tightening; ask for a lubricant or wax coating if parts are assembled with power tools.
Nuts for hot-dip galvanized bolts
A hot-dip galvanized bolt carries about 50 µm of zinc on each thread flank, so a standard nut will not fit. HDG nuts are galvanized as blanks and then tapped oversize: typically by 0.33 mm for M8–M12, 0.38 mm for M16–M24 and 0.40 mm above M24. The tapped nut thread is bare steel and is protected by the zinc on the bolt.
Always order HDG bolts and nuts as a matched set from the same supplier, and never re-tap nuts on site. In ASTM structural work, heavy hex nuts to ASTM A563 DH are supplied overtapped for galvanized F3125 Grade A325 bolts.
ISO 4033 high nuts
ISO 4033 (style 2) nuts use the same width across flats as ISO 4032 but are taller, giving more thread engagement for high-strength or frequently loosened joints. They are not interchangeable with ISO 4032 or DIN 934 nuts without approval, so call out ISO 4033 explicitly rather than writing “high nut”.
How to specify a hex nut in your RFQ
- Standard: DIN 934, ISO 4032, or ISO 4033 for the high (style 2) nut — and whether the alternative is acceptable.
- Thread size and pitch, e.g. M16 or M16 × 1.5 fine thread.
- Property class 5, 8, 10 or 12, or stainless A2 / A4, matched to the bolt.
- Finish matched to the bolt: plain, zinc plated (e.g. ISO 4042 Zn8/Cn/T0), hot-dip galvanized and tapped oversize, or zinc flake.
- Quantity per size, packaging, marking and documents such as an EN 10204 3.1 certificate.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between DIN 934 and ISO 4032?
ISO 4032 nuts are taller than DIN 934 nuts for most sizes, and M10, M12, M14 and M22 use different widths across flats (for example 17 mm vs 16 mm for M10). The thread itself is the same.
Which nut class goes with an 8.8 bolt?
A property class 8 nut is the usual match for an 8.8 bolt, class 10 for a 10.9 bolt and class 12 for a 12.9 bolt. A higher nut class is acceptable; a lower one is not.
Do hot-dip galvanized nuts need oversize threads?
Yes. Nuts for hot-dip galvanized bolts are tapped oversize after galvanizing, typically by 0.33–0.40 mm depending on size. State HDG for both bolt and nut in your RFQ and buy them as a set.
How much does an M12 hex nut weigh?
About 17 g in steel for a DIN 934 nut, or 17.3 kg per 1,000 pieces. An ISO 4032 nut of the same size is slightly heavier because it is taller.
What are the dimensions of an M48 nut?
An M48 hex nut has a 5 mm coarse pitch, a 75 mm width across flats and a 38 mm height in both DIN 934 and ISO 4032. It weighs about 977 kg per 1,000 pieces in steel.
Is there an M32 nut?
Not in the standard coarse-thread series: after M30 the series continues with M33 (second choice) and M36. M32 exists only as a fine-pitch size such as M32 × 1.5, typically for special or fitting applications, so check the drawing for the pitch before ordering.
What is the size of an M16 nut?
An M16 hex nut has a 2 mm pitch and a 24 mm width across flats in both DIN 934 and ISO 4032. Its height is 13 mm for DIN 934 and 14.8 mm for ISO 4032.
What wrench size does an M10 nut need?
17 mm for DIN 934 and 16 mm for ISO 4032.
What is the weight of DIN 934 nuts per 1000 pieces?
In steel, about 5.2 kg for M8, 11.6 kg for M10, 17.3 kg for M12, 33.3 kg for M16, 64.4 kg for M20, 110 kg for M24. The chart lists every size from M4 to M48.
How much does an M8 hex nut weigh?
About 5.2 g in steel for a DIN 934 nut, or 5.2 kg per 1,000 pieces.
How many M12 hex nuts are in 1 kg?
About 58 DIN 934 steel nuts, based on 17.3 kg per 1,000 pieces.
What is the MOQ for hex nuts?
Reference MOQ is 500 pcs per specification. Stock sizes typically ship in 10–15 days and made-to-order sizes in 25–30 days, subject to quotation.
