Metric threaded rod sizes and weights
Tensile stress area As is the effective cross-section used to calculate load capacity. Weight is for plain steel rod per metre of length. Hot-dip galvanizing adds a few percent; stainless steel rod weighs about 1–2 % more than carbon steel.

Threaded rod weight chart by bar length (kg per bar)
Weight per bar is the weight per metre from the table above multiplied by the bar length, for plain steel rod. Use it to plan bundles and freight. A2 / A4 stainless is about 1 % heavier, and hot-dip galvanizing adds roughly 2–5 %, proportionally more on small sizes.

Minimum tensile load by property class (kN)
Minimum ultimate tensile load is the stress area multiplied by the minimum tensile strength of the property class in ISO 898-1: 420 MPa for 4.8, 800 MPa for 8.8 up to M16 and 830 MPa above, and 1,040 MPa for 10.9. These are breaking loads, not working loads; apply the design code and safety factors for your application.

DIN 975, DIN 976-1 and ASTM rod: which name to use
DIN 975 was the long-standing standard for fully threaded rod and is still the name many buyers and catalogues use. It was replaced by DIN 976-1, whose form A covers rod threaded over its full length. There is no ISO standard that directly replaces it, so DIN 976-1 remains the reference for metric threaded rod.
For North American and oil and gas work, threaded rod and studs are often specified by material instead: ASTM A307 for low-carbon rod, ASTM A193 Grade B7 for alloy-steel studs with heavy hex nuts to ASTM A194 Grade 2H, and ASTM F1554 for anchor rods. Those are different products with different test requirements, so name the standard your project requires.

Lengths, cutting and packing
- Stock lengths are 1 m, 2 m and 3 m. Rod is usually packed in bundles by size, labelled with size, grade, finish and quantity.
- Cut lengths are quoted per size at the standard MOQ of 500 pcs per specification. State the cut length, length tolerance and end finish (plain cut or chamfered).
- Zinc-plated rod cut after plating has bare ends. If corrosion at the ends matters, ask for cutting before plating or for end protection.
- Hot-dip galvanized rod needs oversize-tapped nuts, exactly like HDG bolts. Order rod and nuts together.
- Long 3 m rods need suitable packing to avoid bending in transit; ask for wooden cases or steel-strapped bundles for export.
How to specify threaded rod in your RFQ
- Standard: DIN 976-1 form A (full thread), DIN 975, ASTM A193 B7, ASTM A307 or a drawing for studs.
- Diameter and pitch, e.g. M16 or M16 × 1.5, and length: 1 m, 2 m, 3 m or cut length.
- Grade: 4.8, 8.8, 10.9, 12.9, stainless A2 / A4, or ASTM A193 B7.
- Finish with a full designation: plain, zinc plated (e.g. ISO 4042 Zn8/Cn/T0), yellow zinc, HDG to ISO 10684, or PTFE coating for studs.
- Quantity in pieces or metres, matching nuts and washers, bundling, labelling and certificates.

Frequently asked questions
Is DIN 975 still valid?
DIN 975 was replaced by DIN 976-1, which covers fully threaded rods (form A). Many buyers still use the DIN 975 name; the product is the same type.
How much does M12 threaded rod weigh per metre?
About 0.725 kg per metre in steel, so a 3 m length of M12 rod weighs about 2.2 kg.
What lengths do threaded rods come in?
1 m, 2 m and 3 m are the common stock lengths. Rods can also be cut to length for studs; state the cut length, tolerance and end finish (chamfered or plain).
How do I calculate the load on a threaded rod?
Multiply the tensile stress area As by the minimum tensile strength of the property class — for example M12 (84.3 mm²) in class 8.8 (800 MPa) gives about 67 kN minimum breaking load. Apply your design code and safety factors to get a working load.
What is the difference between threaded rod and a stud bolt?
Threaded rod is threaded along its full length and is usually cut from long bars. A stud bolt is a defined length, often to ASTM A193 B7 with two heavy hex nuts, and may be threaded at both ends only. Studs for flanges are ordered to the flange size and pressure class.
What is the MOQ for threaded rods?
Reference MOQ is 500 pcs per specification. Stock sizes typically ship in 10–15 days and made-to-order sizes in 25–30 days, subject to quotation.
How much does an M12 threaded rod weigh per metre?
About 0.725 kg per metre for steel rod, with a 1.75 mm coarse pitch and 84.3 mm² stress area.
What load can an M16 class 8.8 threaded rod take?
The minimum tensile load is 126 kN. Working loads are lower and are set by the design code and safety factors for the application.
How much does M16 threaded rod weigh per metre?
About 1.33 kg per metre in plain steel, so a 3 m bar weighs about 3.99 kg.
How much does M30 threaded rod weigh per metre?
About 4.75 kg per metre in plain steel, so a 3 m bar weighs about 14.25 kg.
How much does M36 threaded rod weigh per metre?
About 6.90 kg per metre in plain steel, so a 3 m bar weighs about 20.70 kg.
What is the load capacity of M10 and M12 threaded rod in kg?
As a minimum breaking load: M10 is 2,490 kg in class 4.8 and 4,730 kg in class 8.8; M12 is 3,610 kg in class 4.8 and 6,870 kg in class 8.8 (1 kN ≈ 102 kg). These are breaking loads, not safe working loads: a hanger or anchor is designed with the safety factors of the applicable code, which typically allows only a fraction of these values.
